Ochuoga and Akonnor Lead Kogalo’s January Masterclass
- Gor Mahia’s unbeaten January has earned Paul Ochuoga and Charles Akonnor top monthly honours in the FKF Premier League.
- With five wins, 15 goals scored and a four-point lead established, Kogalo have sent a clear message in the 2026 title race.
Charles Akonnor and Paul Ochuoga swept the FKF Premier League Coach and Player of the Month awards for January, underlining Gor Mahia’s commanding start to 2026 after an unbeaten run that reasserted their title credentials.
Akonnor, who had faced mounting scrutiny following a difficult December, engineered a tactical reset that delivered five wins and one draw from six league fixtures. The record champions not only collected maximum points in critical matches but also restored defensive compactness and attacking fluidity.
“January was demanding, but the players responded well to our ideas,” Akonnor noted. “We are building something, and this is further testament that the work the technical team is doing is taking shape.”
Ochuoga’s Numbers Tell the Story
Operating from right-back, Ochuoga emerged as the league’s standout performer. The 21-year-old featured in all six matches, contributing four direct goal involvements, one goal and three assists, while also registering 28 cross attempts, eight interceptions and three clean sheets.
His influence went beyond raw metrics. He claimed two Man of the Match awards, first in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Murang’a SEAL where he supplied an assist, and later in a 2-1 triumph against Bidco United where he found the back of the net.
“This award means a lot to me because it reflects the work we put in as a team,” said Ochuoga. “I dedicate it to my coaches, teammates, and the fans who push us to be and remain the best in such a competitive league.”
For his exploits, he received Ksh 50,000 and a customised trophy courtesy of SportPesa, sponsors of the monthly award introduced in October 2025.
January Run in Detail
Gor Mahia’s month began emphatically with a 4-1 dismantling of Kariobangi Sharks on January 6. A goalless draw away to Shabana FC briefly slowed momentum, but Kogalo quickly shifted gears.
They edged Murang’a SEAL 3-2 in a spirited contest, brushed aside Mara Sugar 3-0, secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Bidco United, and closed the month with a commanding 3-0 victory against Sofapaka.
Across those six matches, Gor Mahia scored 15 goals, conceded just four and kept three clean sheets, posting the highest win rate in the division during the period. The run opened a four-point cushion at the summit, though rivals remain within striking distance.
Strong Competition for the Award
Ochuoga edged out stiff competition from teammates and league rivals. Midfield dynamo Enock Morrison impressed with industrious displays and two Man of the Match awards, including a standout showing in the 3-0 win over Sofapaka.
AFC Leopards defender Kaycie Odhiambo was also shortlisted after helping Ingwe secure four consecutive wins and scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over Sofapaka.
Mara Sugar’s Jimmy Owili completed the nominations list, standing out despite his side’s struggles. He featured in all five matches, providing an assist and forcing an own goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz.
Since its inception, the award has recognised consistent excellence. Previous winners include Gor Mahia’s Musa Sharif in October, Ulinzi Stars’ Paul Okoth in November, and Murang’a SEAL captain Joe Waithira in December. Ochuoga now joins that elite list with a memorable start to 2026.
February Tests Await
January may have been a statement, but the real examination lies ahead. Gor Mahia travel to Kericho Green Stadium to face APS Bomet on February 15, host KCB at Kasarani on February 20, and clash with Posta Rangers at Nyayo Stadium five days later.
If Akonnor maintains tactical balance and Ochuoga sustains his attacking output from deep, Kogalo’s resurgence could gather unstoppable momentum.
For now, January belongs to Gor Mahia. The champions are unbeaten, the structure looks restored, and belief has returned to their dressing room.
