Police Go Top as Shabana Keep Flying
Kenya Police climbed to the summit of the FKF Premier League on Saturday after a narrow win over Kariobangi Sharks, while Shabana continued their fine run with a hard-earned victory at Gusii Stadium.
Kenya Police dislodged Gor Mahia from the top of the Sportpesa League standings after edging Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter. The law enforcers responded in style after their setback against Shabana last week, showing grit and discipline to collect maximum points.
The decisive moment came in the 55th minute when Abud Omar rose to the occasion from a set-piece. His composed finish proved enough to separate the sides and send Police supporters into celebration as their team tightened its grip on the title race.
The victory pushed Kenya Police to 20 points from 10 matches, moving them a point clear at the top. Attention now turns to Sunday’s Mashemeji Derby, where Gor Mahia host AFC Leopards. K’Ogalo have a chance to reclaim first place should they overcome Ingwe in the season’s biggest local fixture.
Earlier in the day, Shabana underlined their resurgence with a slim but important 1-0 home win over Bidco United. The first half offered little goalmouth action, but Tore Bobe showed patience and belief after the break.
Mark Okola kept his cool from the penalty spot in the 55th minute to settle the contest and hand Shabana a third straight victory. It was another step forward for Peter Okidi’s side, who have now gone five matches unbeaten, winning three and drawing two over that run.
The result lifted Shabana to fourth on the table with 18 points from 11 games, just two behind the league leaders despite having played a match more.
Their revival has been matched by strong backing off the pitch, with the club banking Ksh878,500 in gate collections as fans once again turned Gusii Stadium red and white.
As the Sportpesa League gathers momentum, the title race is beginning to take shape, with Police setting the pace, Shabana closing in and the Mashemeji Derby set to shake up the standings once more.
