Bayern Munich reclaimed the Bundesliga title on Sunday after second-placed Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw by SC Freiburg, ending any hopes of a title race.
On the back of a 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig, Bayern needed a favor from Freiburg — and Christian Streich’s side delivered, despite a late scare.
Freiburg took a surprise lead just before halftime through Maximilian Eggestein, whose stunning long-range strike found the top corner. Things got worse for Leverkusen moments after the break when Piero Hincapié bundled the ball into his own net, doubling Freiburg’s advantage.
With the pressure mounting and the title slipping away, Florian Wirtz pulled one back in the 82nd minute with a brilliant solo effort, firing in off the post. Jonathan Tah leveled the match deep into stoppage time after heading in a Nathan Tella cross, but it was too little, too late.
Leverkusen, last season’s champions, needed all three points to keep the title race alive following Bayern’s dramatic draw on Saturday. Xabi Alonso’s men fought hard but couldn’t find a winner, confirming Bayern as champions for a record-extending 34th time.
The title marks Harry Kane’s first major career trophy. The England striker, suspended for Bayern’s trip to Leipzig, watched the match with his teammates in Munich and will be part of the celebrations next weekend when Bayern lift the Bundesliga shield at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
