RB Leipzig booked their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over FC St. Pauli in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Goals from Xaver Schlager and Willi Orban helped Leipzig clinch third place with one match remaining as the battle for European qualification intensified across Germany.
The victory sparked celebrations among the Leipzig players and supporters after a campaign filled with pressure and inconsistency.
Leipzig captain David Raum praised the team’s mentality after confirming their return to Europe’s biggest club competition.
The home side entered the contest knowing victory would secure Champions League qualification, while St. Pauli desperately needed points to boost their survival hopes.
Despite their struggles in front of goal in recent weeks, St. Pauli started brightly and created several dangerous counter-attacking opportunities during the opening half.
However, the visitors were once again punished for their wastefulness in the final third after Leipzig capitalised from a set-piece shortly before halftime.
Xaver Schlager reacted quickest inside the box to hook the ball home and hand Leipzig a valuable lead heading into the break.
Leipzig returned for the second half with greater confidence and eventually doubled their advantage through captain Willi Orban.
The experienced defender rose highest inside the area to score with a brilliant header that left the St. Pauli goalkeeper with no chance.
Although St. Pauli continued to fight until the final whistle, they struggled to break down Leipzig’s defence for long periods.
The visitors eventually found a late consolation through Abdoulie Ceesay, but the goal arrived too late to spark a comeback.
The defeat leaves St. Pauli second from bottom in the Bundesliga standings and sets up a decisive final-day showdown against VfL Wolfsburg in the relegation battle.
St. Pauli defender Louis Oppie admitted the importance of the upcoming fixture, describing it as a match the team must approach “like a war” as they fight to remain in the Bundesliga.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, VfB Stuttgart strengthened their hopes of securing Champions League football after a vital 3-1 victory against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Leverkusen stunned the hosts after just 34 seconds when Aleix Garcia capitalised on a defensive mistake to score an early opener.
However, Stuttgart responded strongly through Ermedin Demirovic before Maximilian Mittelstadt converted a chipped penalty on the stroke of halftime.
Deniz Undav later sealed the win with a composed finish as Stuttgart moved into a strong position in the race for a top-four finish.
TSG Hoffenheim also remained firmly in contention after edging Werder Bremen 1-0.
Bremen were reduced to ten men early in the match after Yukinari Sugawara received a red card for a dangerous challenge before Bazoumana Toure scored the decisive goal for Hoffenheim.
Meanwhile, FC Augsburg kept their European hopes alive with a convincing 3-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach thanks to a brace from Michael Gregoritsch.
