Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s long-anticipated transfer to Chicago Fire has officially been sealed, with both clubs confirming the move on Tuesday. The 20-year-old centre-back has signed a contract running until 2029, with an option of extending for an additional season. While financial details were not disclosed, earlier reports indicated that Pirates accepted a fee in the region of R50 million.

Chicago Fire head coach and director of football Gregg Berhalter expressed excitement about the acquisition, praising Mbokazi’s maturity and leadership at a young age. Berhalter noted that the South African defender is expected to make an immediate impact in MLS while still having enormous room for growth.

Mbokazi travelled to Chicago last month for his medical before briefly returning to South Africa, where he featured in Pirates’ Betway Premiership victory over Durban City this past weekend. He also trained with the squad on Tuesday, despite uncertainty over whether he will feature in the Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants in Polokwane.

The young defender has rapidly risen through the ranks since being promoted from the Pirates Diski team in October 2024. His breakout 2024–25 campaign saw him make 12 league starts, take over the captain’s armband, and lift his first senior trophy as Pirates clinched a historic fourth consecutive MTN 8 title.

Mbokazi’s consistency continued into the new season, where he has missed only two league matches. His form earned him a place in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, meaning he will only join Chicago Fire after the tournament concludes.

With this move, Mbokazi joins a growing group of South African talents making their mark in Major League Soccer, including Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Olwethu Makhanya. Pirates confirmed the transfer, wishing him well as he prepares for the next chapter of a promising young career.

Chicago Fire believe they have secured a long-term defensive leader, while South African fans will be watching closely to see how Mbokazi’s career continues to unfold on American soil.
