Josip Stanisic played the hero for Bayer Leverkusen, extending their remarkable unbeaten streak to 45 matches with a dramatic headed goal deep into injury time to salvage a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund.

Following their recent Bundesliga title triumph and midweek victory over West Ham in the UEFA Europa League, Leverkusen faced a stern test against a buoyant Dortmund side fresh from their UEFA Champions League triumph over Atletico Madrid.

Despite Leverkusen controlling possession for large stretches, Dortmund had the better chances in the first half. Marcel Sabitzer's effort was denied by goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, while Leverkusen's Nathan Tella was thwarted by Gregor Kobel in a close-range attempt.

Dortmund appeared to have shattered Leverkusen's unbeaten streak when Niclas Fullkrug struck from Sabitzer's cross. However, Leverkusen showed their resilience and fighting spirit, snatching a draw in the dying moments.

In the 97th minute, Alejandro Grimaldo's corner found the head of Stanisic, who powered the ball into the net, sending Leverkusen's fans into jubilation.

Despite struggling to create clear chances from open play, Leverkusen capitalized on Grimaldo's set-piece deliveries, which proved instrumental in securing the crucial equalizer.

Grimaldo's free-kicks tested Kobel, narrowly missing the target before his pinpoint cross led to Stanisic's decisive header.

Under Xabi Alonso's leadership, Leverkusen demonstrated their refusal to be beaten, salvaging a draw when defeat seemed imminent. This result further fuels speculation that Leverkusen could achieve an unbeaten season, a remarkable feat in modern football.

Stanisic's last-gasp equalizer epitomized Leverkusen's unwavering determination and showcased their ability to grind out results even when not at their best. The draw against Dortmund underscores Leverkusen's resilience and sets the stage for an exciting climax to their unbeaten run and title defense.
