Manchester United tore up the Premier League script on Sunday night, staging a stunning second-half comeback to defeat table-topping Arsenal 3-2 in a pulsating contest at the Emirates Stadium.

In a match billed as a heavyweight showdown, Arsenal looked on course to tighten their grip at the summit when they took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Bukayo Saka kept a loose ball alive inside the area before Martin Odegaard’s strike deflected off Lisandro Martinez and into the net, handing the Gunners a deserved advantage after a dominant opening spell.

However, United refused to be overawed. The visitors grew into the contest and were rewarded in the 37th minute when a costly error from Martin Zubimendi gifted Bryan Mbeumo a clear sight of goal. The forward showed composure to beat David Raya and restore parity, shifting the momentum firmly in United’s favour.

The decisive spell came shortly after the restart. Just five minutes into the second half, Patrick Dorgu combined superbly with Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a sensational curling effort that crashed in off the crossbar, silencing the home crowd and putting United ahead for the first time.

Arsenal responded with urgency as Mikel Arteta emptied his bench, introducing fresh legs and attacking intent. The pressure eventually told in the 84th minute when Mikel Merino reacted quickest to a scrappy corner situation, forcing the ball over the line to make it 2-2 and ignite the Emirates.

But United were not finished. Almost straight from the restart, Kobbie Mainoo slid a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Matheus Cunha, who produced a moment of pure quality. The Brazilian curled an audacious low strike beyond Raya and into the bottom corner, a goal worthy of winning any Premier League match.

The closing stages were frantic as Arsenal threw everything forward, but United stood firm. Late chances for the hosts were snuffed out by disciplined defending and calm goalkeeping as Carrick’s side held on for a famous victory.

The result lifts Manchester United into fourth place, leapfrogging both Chelsea and Liverpool, and marks consecutive league wins over Manchester City and Arsenal. For the Gunners, the defeat is a significant blow, leaving their lead at the top trimmed to just four points and injecting fresh life into an already tense title race.
