After a long and frustrating search for a new manager, Bayern Munich appear to be on the verge of a surprising appointment. The German giants are close to finalizing a deal with Vincent Kompany, currently the manager of relegated Burnley.

Following a trophyless season, Thomas Tuchel's departure in February left a gaping hole in the Bayern dugout. The club's desperation even led them to try and convince Tuchel to stay on, highlighting the importance they placed on finding the right successor.

However, when Tuchel rebuffed their advances, Bayern were forced to look elsewhere. Their initial targets, including established names like Xabi Alonso and Ralf Rangnick, proved unavailable. This led them to a more unexpected choice: Vincent Kompany.

Kompany's candidacy raised eyebrows. Despite leading Burnley back to the Premier League with an exciting brand of attacking football, their subsequent relegation cast doubt on his suitability for a club of Bayern's stature.

Talks with Burnley owner Alan Pace are reportedly at an advanced stage, with compensation being discussed. The hope is to finalize the deal by the end of the week.

While some might question Kompany's experience, especially after a disappointing season with Burnley, others see his progressive tactics as a potential breath of fresh air for Bayern. His playing career included a stint with Hamburg, so he has some familiarity with German football.

Though Chelsea expressed interest, Kompany is not seen as a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge this summer. Pochettino himself could have been an option for Bayern, but having been rejected by Chelsea, he appears out of the picture.

Bayern's pursuit of Kompany represents a gamble, but one fueled by his impressive work at Burnley and his potential to unlock a new dimension in the team's play. The coming days will confirm whether this Überraschung (surprise) appointment will pay off for the German powerhouse.
