The decision to part ways was made in February after Bayern experienced a slump, losing three consecutive matches and falling eight points behind eventual Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite Bayern’s impressive run to the Champions League semi-finals, where they narrowly lost to Real Madrid, and the apparent difficulty in securing a replacement for Tuchel, discussions about continuing next season did take place. However, Tuchel affirmed that he would honor the agreement made in February and leave after Saturday’s final game against Hoffenheim.
Reflecting on the season, Tuchel expressed how the recent performances, notably against Arsenal and Real Madrid, strengthened the bond within the team, making it challenging to leave. However, the inability to reach a consensus on the terms for continuing together led to his decision to depart.
Acknowledging the sadness of leaving behind the team and staff, Tuchel emphasized the close connections forged during his tenure.
Reports surfaced suggesting Tuchel sought an extension until 2026, contrary to his original deal set to run until 2025, which was announced upon his impending exit.
The search for Tuchel’s successor proved futile, with several candidates reportedly declining approaches from Bayern, including former player Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, among others.
Tuchel also confirmed striker Harry Kane’s absence from the final match against Hoffenheim due to a back injury, indicating he had left Germany for treatment. Kane’s absence dashes hopes of surpassing Robert Lewandowski’s single-season Bundesliga goalscoring record.
In addition to Kane, Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Kim Min-jae, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, Raphael Guerreiro, and Sacha Boey will also miss the match.
