Sporting CP delivered a night to remember at Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday after storming into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a breathtaking 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt after extra time.

The Portuguese side had gone into the second leg facing a daunting task after losing the first meeting 3-0, but they produced a powerful response in front of their home fans to complete a famous 5-3 aggregate comeback.

Sporting came flying out of the blocks and immediately pinned Bodo/Glimt deep inside their own half. Trincao, Pote and Luis Suarez all threatened early as the hosts attacked with urgency, knowing they needed a fast start to revive the tie.

Their pressure was eventually rewarded in the 34th minute when Goncalo Inacio rose highest to meet Trincao's corner and powered a header into the top corner to make it 1-0 on the night.

That goal lifted the stadium and gave Sporting fresh belief, although Bodo/Glimt nearly hit back before the break when Odin Bjortuft crashed a header against the crossbar in a huge let-off for the hosts.

Sporting maintained their dominance after half-time and continued to push for the goals needed to get back into the contest. Their second arrived in the 61st minute when Luis Suarez burst down the right and squared for Pote, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net to cut the aggregate deficit to just one goal.

With Bodo/Glimt struggling to contain the relentless pressure, Sporting kept coming. The turning point came in the 78th minute when the referee awarded the hosts a penalty after a VAR review for handball by Fredrik Bjorkan. Suarez stepped up and buried the spot-kick into the bottom corner to level the tie at 3-3 on aggregate.

That strike completed the comeback in normal time, but Sporting were not done yet.

Just two minutes into extra time, Maxi Araujo sent Estadio Jose Alvalade into wild celebrations when he collected a pass from Trincao and fired a fine left-footed finish into the bottom corner to give Sporting the lead in the tie for the first time.

Bodo/Glimt, who had arrived in Lisbon dreaming of a historic quarter-final place, looked stunned as the match slipped away from them. They still had one big chance to force penalties late on, but Rui Silva produced an important save to deny Andreas Helmersen and preserve Sporting's advantage.

The final word belonged to substitute Rafael Nel in stoppage time of extra time. After Daniel Braganca won possession high up the pitch, he slipped the ball to Nel, who kept his composure and rifled his finish into the roof of the net on his Champions League debut to seal a remarkable 5-0 victory on the night.

It was a result Sporting thoroughly deserved. Rui Borges' side finished with 38 shots, 14 on target and an xG of 3.35, underlining just how dominant they were across the second leg. In contrast, Bodo/Glimt managed only nine shots and an xG of 0.54 as their impressive European run came to an end.

Trincao was at the heart of everything good Sporting produced, registering two assists and constantly stretching the Norwegian side, while Suarez also played a decisive role with a goal and an assist. Inacio, Pote, Araujo and Nel all stepped up on a famous night in Lisbon.

For Bodo/Glimt, this was a painful end to what had still been a memorable campaign. The Norwegian side had taken a commanding lead into the second leg and were on the brink of history, but they could not withstand Sporting's intensity, quality and belief.

Sporting now march on to the quarter-finals brimming with confidence after one of the great comeback performances of this season's Champions League. They will face either Arsenal or Bayer Leverkusen in the next round, but after a night like this, few teams will relish meeting them.
